Vietnam and Cambodia Tour 7 days—Itinerary

Day 1: Ho Chi Minh City and Cu Chi Tunnels (B/Guide – Private Tour)

Your Southeast Asian adventure begins with a morning city tour of Ho Chi Minh City’s most significant landmarks. Visit Independence Palace (Reunification Palace), built on the site of the former Norodom Palace and designed by architect Ngo Viet Thu. This widely recognized landmark holds deep historical significance for Vietnam.

Continue to admire beautiful French Colonial architecture, including Notre Dame Cathedral and the historic Central Post Office. Your cultural immersion continues at the War Remnants Museum, featuring extensive displays from both Indochina wars.

After lunch at a local restaurant (not included), depart for Cu Chi Tunnels via approximately 1.5-hour drive. Upon arrival, receive a brief introduction and watch an informational video about tunnel construction and wartime survival strategies.

Spend time navigating the remaining tunnel systems, including specially constructed living areas with kitchens and bedrooms alongside martial facilities such as storage areas, weapons factories, field hospitals, and command centers. These underground networks demonstrate how tunnel residents met basic needs while maintaining security through trap doors and defensive mechanisms.

Experience traditional guerrilla sustenance with tea and cassava, followed by relaxation time or optional shooting range activities before returning to Ho Chi Minh City.

Begin with a visit to Vinh Trang Pagoda, dating back to the late 19th century, before boarding sampans for river cruises around four beautiful islands: Dragon, Unicorn, Phoenix, and Tortoise.

Stop at Unicorn Island for countryside walks through orchards, tropical fruit tastings, and folk song performances by local residents. Visit fruit plantations before taking hand-rowed sampans through Thoi Son Canal, immersing yourself in countryside beauty while visiting family businesses, honey-bee farms, and coconut candy workshops.

Following lunch at a local restaurant (not included), spend your afternoon cycling around Tan Thach village, meeting local villagers to experience authentic Mekong Delta daily life. Those preferring relaxation can enjoy hammock time with cool breezes.

Day 4: Phnom Penh Historical Sites

Sua s’dei! Welcome to Cambodia!

Cambodia’s capital showcases fine French-inspired architecture while serving as guardian to the nation’s complex history. Begin your guided tour at Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S21), a former school converted into a Khmer Rouge torture center where an estimated 20,000+ people were held and tortured.

Continue to the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek, where a memorial stupa containing approximately 8,000 human skulls marks the execution ground for Tuol Sleng torture victims. These sobering sites provide essential context for understanding modern Cambodia’s resilience.

Afterward, balance this difficult history with visits to brighter aspects of Cambodian heritage. Optional activities include the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda, legendary Wat Phnom, or the National Museum with its excellent Khmer collection. Cyclo tours offer relaxed city visits, typically including Central Market, US Embassy, Wat Phnom, Mekong riverfront, Independence Monument, and Royal Palace.

Included Activities:

  • Killing Fields of Choeung Ek
  • Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S21)

Optional Activities:

  • Phnom Penh Cyclo Tour: $5 USD
  • Royal Palace & Silver Pagoda: $10 USD
  • National Museum: $10 USD

Evening arrival allows time for Siem Reap orientation. This tourism center perfectly blends ancient wonders with modern charm. Wander through the colorful Old Market, a treasure trove of local crafts and delicious Cambodian street food.

As night falls, experience traditional Khmer culture through shadow puppet shows while savoring fish amok, Cambodia’s national dish. From lively Pub Street to serene Tonle Sap Lake, Siem Reap offers unforgettable adventures for every traveler.

Special Note: No activities or services included today unless requested.

Day 6: Siem Reap – Angkor Wat Sunrise & Temple Complex

Begin with pre-dawn departure for sunrise outside Angkor Wat. Enter this magnificent temple in darkness (bring flashlight) from the less-visited eastern side, moving along ancient cloistered corridors past the world’s longest stretch of bas-relief carvings. Conclude your Angkor Wat visit with breakfast outside the temple.

Continue to jungle-wrapped Ta Prohm, one of Angkor’s most atmospheric temples. Once home to 2,740 monks, Ta Prohm remains much as it appeared in the early 1850s when French researcher Henri Mouhot came upon this crumbling site.

Proceed to Ta Nei, a late 12th-century stone temple within Angkor Archaeological Park. Visit Angkor Thom’s southern gate, flanked by rows of 54 stone figures on each side—gods to the left, demons to the right—before entering the fortified city of Angkor Thom.

At Bayon Temple, admire beautifully crafted central towers covered with more than 200 enormous faces, then pass the famous Terrace of the Leper King and Terrace of Elephants.

Included Activities:

  • One-day Angkor Pass
  • Angkor Temple guided tour

Optional Activities:

  • Phare Cambodia Circus: $18 USD

Day 7: Tonle Sap Lake

At 8:00 AM, depart your hotel for countryside travel to Tonle Sap Lake, the world’s second-largest freshwater lake. This remarkable ecosystem expands to 12,000 km² during wet season and contracts to 2,500 km² in dry season, creating unique conditions supporting millions of fish, water birds, and local communities. As a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, it serves as a vital area for wildlife conservation and local livelihoods.

Board a private local boat to visit floating villages and observe daily life at Chhong Kneas or Kampong Pluek (seasonal dependent). These trading ports for agricultural products sit on the edge of Tonle Sap Lake, also known as Cambodia’s Great Lake.

Your journey concludes following this morning’s Tonle Sap tour. Extension opportunities in Siem Reap are available through our sales consultant.
